UnityConnect

Project Overview

UnityConnect is a digital platform developed at HackNC 2024 that supports refugees and immigrants through real-time translation, resource directories, and cultural integration tools. The project won the "Best Communication and Community Hack" award for its innovative approach to addressing communication barriers.

• Real-time Translation: Instant translation services for text and voice in over 20 languages
• Resource Mapping: Interactive map showing essential services like healthcare facilities, legal aid offices, language classes, and community centers
• AI Assistant: Multilingual chatbot that can answer common questions about immigration processes, available resources, and cultural adaptation
• Community Forum: Space for users to connect, share experiences, and offer mutual support

Technical Implementation

UnityConnect was built using:

• Unity for the front-end interface and mapping functionality
• Natural language processing for the AI assistant
• Firebase for real-time database and authentication
• Google Maps API for location services
• Google Translate API for translation services

Impact & Recognition

UnityConnect was recognized at HackNC 2024 for its potential to make a significant impact on refugee and immigrant communities. The judges particularly praised the project's focus on practical, accessible solutions to real-world communication challenges.

Following the hackathon, we've been working with local refugee support organizations to refine the platform and prepare it for a pilot program.
